This species is found with or partners with the following hosts. Ectomycorrhizal hosts (green border) form a root-level partnership; ericoid / arbutoid shrubs (purple border) share the same mycorrhizal networks.

Historically the dominant Eastern ECM tree; blight-diminished but being restored.

Truffle / bolete / chanterelle host. Acorns edible after leaching.
Red-to-pink bracket mushroom on living oaks that bleeds red juice when cut — looks and feels like raw beef. Acidic and lemony when raw (good in salads sliced thin) or cooked. No dangerous lookalikes.
Low on the trunks of living oak (especially white oak) and occasionally chestnut across eastern North America, the UK, and Europe. Late summer through fall.
