This species is found with or partners with the following hosts. Ectomycorrhizal hosts (green border) form a root-level partnership; ericoid / arbutoid shrubs (purple border) share the same mycorrhizal networks.

Chaga, birch bolete, birch polypore host.
Scaber-stalk bolete with a brown sponge-like cap and a white stem covered in small black scabers (rough projections). Specific to birch hosts. Mild flavor — dries well for winter.
Under birch trees across boreal and northern temperate forests. Mycorrhizal with birch only. Summer through fall.
