This species is found with or partners with the following hosts. Ectomycorrhizal hosts (green border) form a root-level partnership; ericoid / arbutoid shrubs (purple border) share the same mycorrhizal networks.

Chaga, birch bolete, birch polypore host.
Black crusty cinder-like growth on living birch. Orange-brown interior when cracked open. Parasitic — causes a persistent heartwood rot. Studied for antioxidant, immunomodulatory, and anti-cancer compounds (betulinic acid concentrated from the birch host).
Living birch trees (especially yellow and paper birch) across boreal and northern temperate forests. Harvestable year-round.
