This species is found with or partners with the following hosts. Ectomycorrhizal hosts (green border) form a root-level partnership; ericoid / arbutoid shrubs (purple border) share the same mycorrhizal networks.

Generic conifer habitat — pine, spruce, fir, hemlock, or Douglas-fir. Shown when the species is reported from conifers without a specific tree.
Small to medium orange-brown mushroom with a pointed cap and yellow-olive tones on the stem. Contains orellanine, a slow-acting kidney toxin with symptoms appearing 3 days to 3 weeks after ingestion — often too late for treatment.
Coniferous forests, especially with spruce and pine, across Europe and North America. Late summer through fall.

CHOICE EDIBLE but multiple deaths have occurred from chanterelle-hunters accidentally picking orange Cortinarius. Chanterelles have FALSE gills (ridges); Cortinarius has TRUE gills and a rusty-brown spore print.
Can also cause problems but less deadly. Bitter taste.
