This species is found with or partners with the following hosts. Ectomycorrhizal hosts (green border) form a root-level partnership; ericoid / arbutoid shrubs (purple border) share the same mycorrhizal networks.

Extremely rare cigar-shaped fungus that splits into a star when mature. Known ONLY from central Texas and Japan — one of the most geographically improbable distributions in the fungal kingdom. Whistles audibly when releasing spores.
Rotting cedar elm roots in central Texas; also reported in southern Japan. Fall through winter.
