This species is found with or partners with the following hosts. Ectomycorrhizal hosts (green border) form a root-level partnership; ericoid / arbutoid shrubs (purple border) share the same mycorrhizal networks.

Living hardwood trees attacked by parasitic/heart-rot fungi — tinder fungus, dryad’s saddle, bear’s head tooth.

Generic hardwood habitat — oak, maple, beech, birch, etc. Shown when the species is reported from hardwoods generally.
Large tan-and-brown scaly bracket on living and dead hardwood, with a distinct watermelon-rind smell. Tender and edible when young; tough as shoe leather at maturity. Also called Pheasant Back.
Standing and fallen hardwoods (elm, maple, poplar, basswood) across temperate North America and Europe. Spring into early summer.
