"Cap hangs like a thimble on top of the stem. Many eat them; some get loss of coordination. Risky."
This species is found with or partners with the following hosts. Ectomycorrhizal hosts (green border) form a root-level partnership; ericoid / arbutoid shrubs (purple border) share the same mycorrhizal networks.

Morel indicator (dying cottonwoods along rivers).
Looks morel-like but the cap hangs like a skirt from the TOP of the stem (fully free all around). Stem is stuffed with cottony fibers — NOT hollow. Some people experience GI distress or neurological symptoms, especially with repeated meals.
Cottonwood, aspen, and apple-orchard edges. Early to mid spring — BEFORE true morels in many areas.

Choice. Morels are COMPLETELY hollow from cap through stem; Verpa has cottony-stuffed stem.
