This species is found with or partners with the following hosts. Ectomycorrhizal hosts (green border) form a root-level partnership; ericoid / arbutoid shrubs (purple border) share the same mycorrhizal networks.

Mixed conifer and hardwood forest — widespread habitat for generalist ECM mushrooms.
Saddle-shaped black or dark gray cap with a ribbed hollow white stem. Member of the false-morel family. Contains low levels of gyromitrin-like compounds — cook thoroughly, do not eat repeatedly.
Moss and disturbed ground in mixed forests across North America and Europe. Late summer through fall.
