"A bolete that grows ON a Scleroderma earthball. Nature's Pokémon evolution chain."
This species is found with or partners with the following hosts. Ectomycorrhizal hosts (green border) form a root-level partnership; ericoid / arbutoid shrubs (purple border) share the same mycorrhizal networks.

Parasites of other mushrooms — lobster mushroom (Hypomyces on Russula/Lactarius), parasite bolete (on earthballs), bolete mold.
Unusual bolete that grows PARASITICALLY on earthballs (Scleroderma) — literally sprouting from the toxic puffball host. Not for eating despite being edible — the host is toxic and it's too rare to justify picking.
On top of Scleroderma earthballs in moist woods. Uncommon. Summer through fall.
