This species is found with or partners with the following hosts. Ectomycorrhizal hosts (green border) form a root-level partnership; ericoid / arbutoid shrubs (purple border) share the same mycorrhizal networks.

Mixed conifer and hardwood forest — widespread habitat for generalist ECM mushrooms.
Deep violet-purple Cortinarius with a dry scaly cap and purple gills. One of the most striking purple mushrooms in the forest. Like all Cortinarius except gypsy mushroom, treat as toxic — genus contains deadly orellanine species.
Old-growth coniferous and mixed forests across North America and Europe. Late summer through fall.

EDIBLE. Blewits have a smooth cap and pink spore print; violet cort has a scaly cap and rust-brown spore print. Deadly webcap lookalikes make this species too risky to eat.
