"True gills (chanterelles have ridges). Glow faintly green in the dark. Violently upsets stomachs."
Mushroom ID is a rule-out game. Every entry below describes something that looks similar — learn the differences before eating.

Chanterelles have BLUNT RIDGES (false gills) running down a tapered stem, fruit ALONE in soil, never in clusters. Jack-o-lanterns have TRUE SHARP GILLS and grow in DENSE CLUSTERS from wood or buried roots. They glow faintly in the dark.

Oysters have WHITE-TO-CREAM caps with gills running DOWN the short stem, growing as SHELVES on wood. Jack-o-lanterns are BRIGHT ORANGE and grow in ROUND CLUSTERS at tree bases, not shelf-like.
This species is found with or partners with the following hosts. Ectomycorrhizal hosts (green border) form a root-level partnership; ericoid / arbutoid shrubs (purple border) share the same mycorrhizal networks.

Truffle / bolete / chanterelle host. Acorns edible after leaching.
Orange to pumpkin-colored gilled mushroom fruiting in dense clusters at the base of hardwood stumps. Gills glow faintly green in the dark (fresh specimens). Toxin illudin S causes severe vomiting, diarrhea, and cramping — not deadly but spectacularly unpleasant.
Base of oak, chestnut, and other hardwood stumps and buried roots across the eastern US. Summer through fall, in large clusters.
